Review: The Midnight Game by Cynthia Murphy

by Sophia Downey

Our Youth Literacy Ambassador Sophia Downey shares her thoughts on The Midnight Came, written by Cynthia Murphy.

About The Midnight Game:

Do not turn on the lights. Do not go to sleep. Do not leave the building.

When a group who have met on a creepy Deddit thread decide to meet in real life, they only have one plan in mind: they are going to summon the Midnight Man. And once you start the Midnight Game, you must finish it - there's no other way out!

Six strangers. One night. But how many survivors?

Sophia's Review:

The Midnight Game is a mystery thriller that keeps you on your toes until the very last page, with themes of mystery and murder along with teen relationships and secrets. The chapters alternate between the points of view of each of the main characters, making you feel instantly more connected to all of them as well as keeping you guessing as to who the murderer is because none of them give it away!

All the characters are high school students who meet on a Deddit thread (a new social media platform) where they discuss games that have creepy legends surrounding them. Ultimately this leads to them meeting in person to play a previously unheard of game called the Midnight Man where, supposedly, if you do not follow a set of rules given to players the Midnight Man will find and kill you.

I found the mixed media in this book highly engaging with the chapters separated by information, articles and messages about other creepy games and Deddit threads. This additional and varied text just added to the overall creepiness and mystery surrounding the story and each of the characters.

This book overall is just fantastic and is now one of my top rated of all time! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries and thrillers. For people who enjoy this book, I would also recommend Win Lose Kill Die by Cynthia Murphy and It’s Behind You by Kathryn Foxfield as they are equally as gripping.
