Changes to Libby and Kanopy eLibrary services

Suffolk Libraries has been informed of an important update by Overdrive – the company that runs our Libby eBook service and our Kanopy video streaming service.

From 15 April they are removing their support for these two apps on older Android operating systems. This will unfortunately mean these two apps will not work on Android devices with the 7.1.0 operating system or earlier from this date.

Customers with devices running Android OS 7.1.0 or earlier will need to update their operating system or switch to another supported device to continue using these services. You can find help on how to check which operating system you are running and how to update it from Google.

Suffolk Libraries is very sorry for any inconvenience but this change is beyond our control. OverDrive say only a small percentage of their users are using this older operating system and this change is necessary to uphold their standards of security and customer privacy.

Google has also discontinued support for earlier versions of the Android OS, and we hope this change will only affect a limited number of our customers. However, you may wish to check which operating system you are using ahead of the change to check if you will be affected.

From the week of March 25, impacted Libby users will see a message to update their operating system or switch to another supported device to continue using the app. This message will include steps for how to use a setup code to easily copy their library cards, loans, holds, and tags to another device.

After 15 April, impacted Kanopy users will see a message indicating that their OS is no longer compatible, with a prompt to update.
