Summer Reading Challenge another smashing success in Suffolk!

Suffolk Libraries, the charity that runs the county’s library service, is delighted to report that this year’s Summer Reading Challenge has proven more popular than last year’s.

The Summer Reading Challenge is the country’s biggest literacy campaign and is a fun and engaging way of maintaining children’s reading skills over the summer holidays.

The theme for this year’s challenge was Gadgeteers, with a focus on creativity and scientific innovation.

More than 7000 children took part in the challenge in Suffolk this year, which is about 600 more than last year. Almost 4000 children read six books and completed the challenge, and over 3100 children signed up for a library card over the summer holidays.

Many libraries also hosted Gadgeteers-themed activities during the holidays to keep children entertained and engaged with the theme of creativity. Some events included crafts, science workshops, Lego building and more.

Paul Howarth, Director of Audience & Content, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to see that so many children have taken part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. A huge congratulations to all who completed the challenge, and we hope it’s inspired a love of reading for many young children and that you keep on reading and visiting the library.

“Thank you also to our amazing staff and volunteers who listened to children talk about the books and hosted engaging activities. We’re very excited to see how next year’s challenge goes.”
