A new bigger, better library for Needham Market Library!

Suffolk Libraries is excited to announce that the new Needham Market Library is now open to customers.

Funded by Mid-Suffolk District Council as part of the development of the Middle School site, the new library building offers a bigger and more modern space for library events and activities, as well as bookable meeting rooms for the local community.

Located at the newly-created Teachers Close, just off School Street, the library is part of a new development that includes 41 homes, made up of a combination of houses, flats and bungalows.

The library features a new children’s area, with a special sensory wall and more dedicated space for children’s events and activities, such as Wordplay and story time sessions for young children.

Bruce Leeke, Chief Executive of Suffolk Libraries, said:

“It’s incredibly exciting to be opening another new library for Suffolk residents. It’s already a big year as we celebrate Suffolk Libraries’ ten-year anniversary and this is the sixth new library to open in that time. All our libraries tailor their offer to suit the needs of the local community. Having dedicated, extra space will make a big difference to what we can offer to everyone in Needham Market.

“We know from our experiences at Mildenhall, and other new sites, that exciting and fun spaces really capture people’s imagination, allowing residents to enjoy an even better library experience. It marks another significant step on our journey to make life better for people across Suffolk by supporting them at the heart of their community. We’re very grateful to Mid Suffolk District Council, Suffolk County Council and everyone involved in the redevelopment of the site for creating an exciting and inspiring space for the local community.”

Cllr Gerard Brewster, cabinet member for economic growth at Mid Suffolk District Council said:

“The new library is part of our development of the former middle school site which will see over 40 new affordable homes delivered for the town. The former Victorian school building is being converted to accommodate a new library as well as a flexible space for range of events and activities. This is part of our wider vision for Needham Market which will also see the development of homes at the former Mid Suffolk HQ and the opening of a new café and visitor centre at Needham Lake, helping to create an attractive, successful and connected place for people to live, work and visit.”

Cllr Andrew Reid, Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Public Health, Public Protection and Communities, added:

“The new library in Needham Market will bring a real boost to the community, offering a modern space and improved services for residents, including dedicated spaces for children and new reading and learning activities on offer. Libraries are the heart of our communities and this new development demonstrates Suffolk County Council’s continued investment in libraries for future generations.”

The old library closed on 30 January and the new building was officially opened on 8 February. The opening hours and contact number remain the same.
